KIGALI - Ministers of the East African Community, yesterday, asked the East African Legislative Assembly, to justify the request for more money to finance their activities for the remaining part of the fiscal year.

With only three months to the end of the financial year, the regional lawmakers want an additional US$ 328,000 to complete the remaining sessions.

The Ministers are currently meeting in Kigali to consider a report prepared by the coordination committee of regional Permanent Secretaries. The report also includes the budget increment.

In an interview with The New Times, Rwanda’s Monique Mukaruliza noted that EALA must provide more explanations to the EAC Council of Ministers.

“We have agreed with other ministers that EALA must convince us exhaustively by providing more explanations how and why they need this amount to be approved,” Mukaruliza said.

The EAC minister from Uganda, Eriya Kategaya, said that the money requested needed to be justified, adding that EALA has to prove that it needs the money.

The EALA members are also requesting for  new vehicles to facilitate their movements.
